Issue 63 - Feb/Mar 2018

We were devastated to hear the news that someone who’s featured quite a bit in the magazine had a tragic accident early in the New Year. Baden McNab featured right through Richie Heazlewood’s great series of adventures when the boys took a year off after finishing university and went hunting. Richie, Baden and Todd Howard were mates of Willie’s from Uni, and stayed here at home with us on the Sika hunt part of their adventures. The “bomb-up boys” I used to call them, as they were very successful and took some awesome trophies! Baden died on January 2nd while free diving with friends and family in the Marlborough sounds. He will be sorely missed by all his hunting friends and family. Make the most of every day in the outdoors, as that is what you’ll be remembered for, not how long and hard you worked at making money…

Another debacle that’s shaping up fast is the supposed Waro Review (or lack of it) promised to us by DoC and confirmed by Mike Slater, the deputy Director General of DoC. Please read the GAC update on page 106 for more background on this if you’re not up with the play. Make no mistake, Waro is as big an issue as 1080, and in fact bigger in our premier trophy herds as unlike 1080 which is non selective (in fact more likely to kill younger animals, and its affect can be minimised with deer repellent), Waro is selectively targeting the very animals most valued by recreational hunters and those most needed for the genetics and future of the herd.
