Issue 52 - Apr/May 2016

By the time you read this the roar will be underway, and we’ll all be enjoying one of our favourite times of the year.

Just when we thought we’d be missing out on Fiordland this year, we got a last minute cancellation (of which there were quite a few this year as parties pulled out at the last minute), and we’re heading into the Wild Natives next week for the second period. The weather has been a bit variable for the first period guys, and its looking a bit wet for us too!

If you have some success over the roar period, don’t forget to take plenty of photos and we’d love to have the story of your hunt. Don’t feel just because you weren’t good at English at school, that you can’t write an entertaining hunting yarn. I failed English, and now I write quite a lot for a living! And we can help you knock your story into shape grammar and spelling wise, so don’t let the fear of producing something readable put you off having a go!

This issue we have...

  • Sandy’s massive Otago 16 pointer
  • The tahr rut
  • Fi’s beaut 9 point Sika!
  • The new number one chamois by bow – taken by a lady hunter!

The Spot the Logo Winners for Issue 51 were  Mark Gifford and Bruce Keeley. Logos were on page 35 in the Huntech ad and page 64 in the Garmin ad.

The Subscription prize winners are Andrew Rowland – Helisika flight; Conor Carlaw – Lowa Tibet boots and Willen Ikink – Stoney Creek Glaisnock Jacket.

As you’ll see on page 102 our TV Show is having a holiday for four weeks over April while we’re all in the hills, and starts again on April 27th. The mega waterfowling episode is on the Wednesday before opening weekend, on May 4th so that should give the duck fever a serious nudge leading up to the big day on Saturday!

Be careful out there this roar - think carefully about what you are going to shoot, identify exactly what type of animal you’re looking at and exactly where you are going to shoot it and there’s no chance you’ll make a big mistake!
