Issue 50 - Dec 2015/Jan 2016

At long last we are starting to see some animals with a bit of condition back on them. It’s been a fairly extended cold spring in most places, and fairly dry in the east, so the growth has kicked into life slowly, then got burnt off by the westerlies, before another decent drop of rain has got it going again – I’m glad my food supply isn’t quite so erratic!

The Ruahine Waro saga continues, with the Deputy DG Mike Slater now extending the date they will release their review of the new Waro permit for the Ruahines, Tararuas and Rimutakas. He had promised his decision by the end of September, but it’s the 7th of December as I write this and still we’ve heard nothing. If the new permit conditions are not reversed, the Lower North Island Hunter Liaison group will be going for a judicial review of the decision, and our legal opinion says we have a very good case. We will be looking for donations from any hunters who use these areas to help fund this court action, so please contact either our secretary Derrick Field or chairman Gordon George, or me if you would like to contribute to the fighting fund. We are just back from a three generations trip with my 82 year old father, Willie’s grandpa, hunting the North Western Ruahines. The old boy did amazingly well considering he’s got buggered knees and never gave up, despite leaving one hut at 6am in the morning, and not getting to the next one until midnight in the pouring rain - a total of 18 hours on the go across some pretty rugged terrain!

It will be a neat episode in the next series of NZ Hunter Adventures starting February next year.

So put that in your calendars now!

Greg
