Issue 42 - Aug / Sept 2014

With waterfowl over for another year its back to the tail end of the Rusa rut and Sambar are underway as well.

There’s still tahr and chamois to chase and winter Sika and Fallow but you’ll have to be quick to catch a Red stag with antlers on. It’s been a funny old winter so far, with lots of rain up north but few frosts, so the grass is still growing in most places.

It is still with some sadness I write this editorial. Our one year old Chessie Clipper drowned two weeks ago in a tragic accident that has left us all reeling. Clipper has been with Elsa at my side every day in the last 6 months or so since he was big enough to go to work. Nine and a half year old Elsa was really enjoying sharing her workload, whether it be carrying their dog packs full of water on fly camps to the tops and then a load of venison home, through to rapid retrieves in 100kmh winds when we’d just knocked 5 or 6 ducks down out of a flight and they were rapidly disappearing into the huge waves on Lake Ellesmere. His power and drive in the big water was outstanding for a year old dog, and yet he was the most biddable and happy go lucky dog to have around. In the year he was with us he carved a place in our hearts, and he’s left a big hole that will be hard to fill.
