Issue 41 - Jun / July 2014

I hope the waterfowl season’s going well for you all. There have been mixed reports from around the country. We had a great time over opening weekend with no rain which always pleases the female contingent of the family shooting party!

Its tahr rut time now, and there’ll be a few good bulls on the deck by the time you read this. We’ve got a trip coming up to one of the South Westland ballot blocks, with good mate Derek Johnson which should be fun. Derek is one of the West Coast’s most experienced hunters, and accompanied us to Fiordland this year. This issue we’ve got his 20 tips, giving us the benefit of his knowledge about how to hunt trophy tahr during the rut.

After tahr the Rusa get into gear later in June, and the Sambar too. So we’ll be up and down like yoyos as usual!

We kick off this issue with...

  • Josh’s epic tahr rut ballot trip – the Buckshot Bull of Buttress Creek!
  • Clinchey’s Sika roar
  • Rob’s huge Red from the Kaikouras
  • How to read the wind!
  • Pigs without dogs
  • Pat’s trophy chamois journey
  • Namibian Drums – hunting the desert antelope
  • Godfathers, goodies, and the great outdoors – family magic
  • Derek’s 20 tahr rut tips for a trophy bull
  • The BRB tells us about the Withey system for hybrid Sika
  • Flexibility for the hunter
  • Simon’s Straight shooting structure – for the bow
  • The “selfie”, the latest craze in hunting photography
  • Know your bush – Large leaf coprosmas
  • Teresa teaches an old dog new tricks
  • Revenge of the Mallard!
  • The GAC appointments are in!
  • Roast leg of chamois with anchovy and garlic

We Evaluate:

  • Sauer’s 101XT in 6.5x55
  • MSR’s MuthaHubba NX 3 man tent

Tahr Show

Don’t forget the Tahr Show in Christchurch on the 2nd and 3rd of August. There are some new competitions and prizes this year, with a 17HMR Sako Quad for the most varmint ears handed in. This includes rabbits, possums, wallabies, hares, rats – one entry per pair of ears handed in; then feral cat, ferrets, stoats, weasels - 5 entries per pair of ears. You can see the emphasis is on the worst predators of our bird life - the mustelids and feral cats. There is still a Beretta shotgun for the duck’s feet lucky draw and a Tikka T3 rifle and scope package for the nanny tahr horns. There’ll be the ever popular instructional seminars; and the trophy, photographic and roaring competitions. Richard, chef from the Christchurch casino and of course his magazine, will have his incredibly popular and unbelievably good food available again. We’ll be running the NZ Hunter Live Duck and Goose Calling National Champs again, in conjunction with Grounds Calls.

This competition is growing in popularity every year, and we’ll have more info about it on the NZ Hunter website and Facebook page in the coming months.
The venue is the Pioneer Stadium Christchurch, the same as last year. Keep an eye out on the Tahr Show website for updates on seminars, prizes etc as they are finalised - www.nztahr.co.nz

Spot the Logo and Tightlines Competition Winners

Last issue’s spot the logo winners were Daniel Dawson and Nathan Young. The logos were on page 23 – Huberd’s Shoe Grease and page 85 – Target Products.

The NZ Hunter Facebook page Tightlines photo winner for last issue was Lori Bennet, and the video winner was Sean Mull. Keep sending your pics and vids through to our website or direct to Willie at the Facebook page and be in to win! ! www.facebook.com/NZHunterMagazine

No matter what your favourite hunting pastime, with two months to go there’s still plenty of time to get out and shoot yourself a nanny tahr, a duck, and as many varmints as you can. So get to it and we’ll see you all at the Tahr Show in August!
