Issue 39 - Feb / Mar 2014

Well, it’s that time of year again. The antlers are hardening off and before you know it we’ll be hearing first the bugles, then the Red and Sika roars and Fallow grunts.

We won a Wapiti ballot, but a ballot computer glitch took it off us so now we wait on a cancellation. Ah well, there’s always next year, and we’ll get into the Reds early if nothing pans out in the Deep South..

In this issue!

  • Leading in we have Julian and Tajh’s massive wild Red stag
  • Josh’s big Sika trophy
  • A triple header of bucks and bulls
  • Urewera Cruisin’ part 2
  • The Back Ridge Butcher’s Old Post stag
  • A “Stag do stag”
  • Toddy’s chamois trip
  • The hunt for a bucket list bull - Elk hunting in Wyoming
  • The One Stop Wapiti Shop – the secret to shooting a good bull
  • Simon measures you up for a bow
  • Johnnie’s hunt for a big Red stag part 1
  • Treasured and forgotten trophies
  • Matt’s “Fitness for the Hunter” Part 2
  • Greig’s “Aim small, hit big”
  • Know your Bush - the “Finger” trees
  • Ten by Twelve – the 10 things to teach your pup in the first 12 months
  • Paul uses the lead shot benchmark to choose his steel shot loads
  • Pimp Your Ute part 6 – the final roundup
  • Richard’s roast pheasant

We Evaluate:

  • Blaser’s R8 in 7mm and 300 Blaser magnums
  • Steiners 8x30 Ranger and 10x42 Cobra
  • Leupold’s 4-24x52 VX6

Spot the Logo and Tightlines Competition Winners

Last issue’s spot the logo winners were Matt Glass and Corban Piner. The logos were in the MSR ad on page 13, and the Sitka Gear ad on page 83.

The NZ Hunter Facebook Tightlines photo and video winners were Sean Mull and Josh James. Keep those pics and vids rolling in and make sure you vote for your favourites with your likes. www.facebook.com/NZHunterMagazine

Summing up....

With the silly season not far away, remember it’s always another hunter until you’ve gone down a mental checklist to eliminate that possibility and positively identified it as a deer, and the particular deer you want to shoot, and you’re aiming at the particular place where you want to hit it. If you always run down this mental checklist, you will never accidently shoot someone.

Don’t rush the decision, slow down and think about it before you pull the trigger!

Good luck this roar and stay safe!

Greg
