Issue 37 - Oct / Nov 2013

The winter has been a bit of a mixed bag so far everywhere we’ve been.

We’ve had some doozie storms and then some quite balmy warm northerly weather in between times. At long last now we’re getting the usual runs of settled frosty weather which are some of my favourite hunting conditions this time of year.

In this issue!

  • First up we have a big 14 pointer from the Ruahines!
  • Nick’s massive 12 inch chamois
  • “Parker” – the story of a rifle
  • Reds and chamois in the Canterbury high country
  • Johnny tells us how to get the most out of your meat animals
  • Go hunting Daddy!
  • A trophy tahr at last!
  • Bowhunter of the year Simon Bullivant starts a new series
  • Dave talks trigger control
  • The student hunter boys chase chamois
  • Roy asks some searching questions about the Wapiti
  • Greig justifies why we hunt
  • Matt’s photography tips 10 to 20
  • Bush hunting the Shuttleworth way
  • Know your trees for the hunter – a new series by Dave Yule
  • Dove shooting extravaganza in Argentina
  • Double trouble – multiple retrieves part 2
  • PYU – bullbars, winches, snorkels, sill protectors, canopies and making the most of your space
  • We say farewell to Bruce Banwell

We Evaluate:

  • Aimpoint sights
  • LED Lensers M17R
  • Andrew GZ2 boots
  • Camone action camera

On Facebook

Willie has the NZ Hunter facebook page humming along nicely now so we’ve decided to run our photo and video competitions concurrently over there as well. You can either load them onto here in our Photo and Video Galleries as you’ve been doing and we’ll take the best ones over to Facebook, or private message your pics and vids to us at Facebook, and we’ll put them up. The winner each issue will the one with the most Facebook likes.

New Subs Prize

This issue we’ve started another subs prize draw with awesome prizes, running in conjunction with our PYU series. The biggie is a set of Mickey Thompson tyres valued at $2500! This is a superb opportunity for some lucky subscriber to end up with a set of what are arguably the best 4WD tyres in the world. Check out the subs prize draw page inside the back cover. All current subscribers at the time the prize is drawn will be eligible.

Prize Winners this Issue

We’ve just drawn the previous subs prize and the winners were Mike Marfell, Nelson; Matthew Ross, Oamaru; and Craig King, Invercargill.

This issue’s spot the logo winners were Graeme Slatter and Wesley Dobbs. The logos were on the Sellier & Bellot ad on page 8 and the East Kaweka Helicopters ad on page 85.

Spring is well and truly here now, the winter finished pretty early and there is good growth coming away at least at lower levels. The majority of our species have dropped their antlers now but it’s a great time to look for a bull tahr trophy. As the growth comes away at lower altitudes, the bulls drop lower down in the morning and evening looking for it.

After a relatively kind winter the spring venison should be in better condition than usual, so get out and fill the freezer!

Hope to see you all at the Sika Show

Greg
