Issue 59 - Jun/Jul 2017

It’s been an incredibly busy 3 months hunting and filming, and it's good to park my butt in the office (did I really just say that?!) and finish off this issue of the magazine.

Opening weekend on “The Lake” was the quietest ever for us, but we made up for it with a filming trip to visit Paul in Southland – definitely the home of the Mallard! It's great to hear there’s been a bit of a resurgence in bird numbers in a lot of North Island areas, with the Waikato, Eastern and the Manawatu being well up on the last few years. Even Lake Wairarapa has had more birds than it’s seen for a number of years.

And then it was back looking for post rut stags. We found “Fi’s big stag”, but unfortunately the winter snows beat us when we went back to look for him.The chamois and tahr rut is in full swing now, although we’ve been seeing mainly 4 and 5 year old herd bulls with the nannies. Make sure you take the time to look for that big old mature bull who will most likely be off somewhere on his own with the particular nanny on heat. He’s the one you’re after!

There are still our favourite months of the waterfowl season to come in those areas with the three month season, and plenty of big game hunting opportunities to boot. Prime times for tahr, chamois, Rusa, Sambar, and still a couple of months before the Red stags drop their antlers before the real depths of winter.

So get out and make the most of it!
