Issue 46 - Apr / May 2015

It's that time of year - the roar with duck opening not far behind!

We’ve never done less summer hunting than this year, as trying to get all the TV Show episodes broadcast ready as well as this edition of the magazine has kept us nose to the computers since before Christmas! The only time off was the four days in the hills to film episode two in the Ruahines screening this Wednesday night, which hopefully you will have seen by the time you read this, along with episodes three and four. Anyway there’s lots more interesting stuff to come, with the Red and Sika roar episodes, waterfowling on some of the South’s desolately beautiful big water, honkers back up North, and the tahr rut in the Landsborough Wilderness area. Don’t forget, Choice TV, Freeview 12/Sky 26, Wednesday nights at 9.30pm.

We are finally off to Fiordland to start filming season two of the Show, so fingers crossed we get some good weather. Just to make things interesting I broke my big toe three weeks ago and its only just started to mend, so that’s going to be a fun experience in the big country for the next 10 days!

This issue we have...

  • Joe Dobson’s big classic Otago herd 12 pointer from the Albert Burn
  • A Kaweka Sika 8
  • Simon’s Northwest Nelson chamois walkabout
  • Julian’s Sika roar how-to
  • West Coast tahr and chamois
  • Little Red gets a good Sika 8 at last!
  • Deer dogs part 2
  • Rob’s “After the roar”
  • Hunting on the Hinge – bull tahr by bow
  • Tahr and chamois rut how-to
  • Advanced Handloading – seating the projectile
  • Greig’s tough hunting – take a cement pill!
  • Reading mountain weather
  • A Waro helicopter encounter
  • Know your bush – pepperwood
  • Geoff’s Southern Waterfowling Safari
  • Goosin’ with Hunter
  • A duck to water, I mean ‘land’!
  • Gun shy dogs
  • GAC update – the demise of Waro yet again?
  • Air dried salami

Test Fires:

  • Leupold’s 3-18x44 and 50mm VX6 Zero-Lock

Hopefully everyone has their roar trips planned, and you all have successful hunts, and we have a flood of great stories come through the door! But keep it safe out there this April - decide on what your goal is animal wise, then take the time to make absolutely sure that’s what you have in your sights - that way no one will get shot in mistake for a deer!

Hot barrels for May 2nd for the waterfowlers out there,

Greg
