Issue 44 - Dec 2014 / Jan 2015

It’s been a windy old spring in most of the country with some pretty late snow in places, and now it’s starting to get fairly dry.

Typical El Nino conditions if we are to believe the weather forecasters. There’s been the odd lovely day in between the rubbish, and I hope you’ve all made the most of them! Now as we run down to Christmas, the deer are finally getting fatter and it’s time to fill the freezer with some good eaters.

While frantically busy trying to organise enough sponsorship to get the NZ Hunter Adventures TV Show to air, we’ve still managed to get out hunting. Don’t forget to tell all your friends to watch the Show, even if they aren’t necessarily hunters. Anyone will enjoy our mix of wonderful scenery and game animal footage, and there’s a fair bit of family fun mixed in too. If you want to see more hunting shows on mainstream TV then we need to get the ratings to show the channels that we are sizable section of their potential viewing audience. We don’t know our final time slot yet, but it will be between 7.30pm and 10.30pm, Wednesday night on free to view Choice TV, starting February 2015 - so put that on your calendars now! We’ll be running a series of competitions on Choice TV and on our website and Facebook page leading up to the series starting. Daniel McGregor recently won the Domex sleeping bag courtesy of Tightlines for guessing the correct range to a bull tahr in a screen shot from one of our episodes on our Facebook page. There’s plenty more competitions to come, so keep your eyes peeled and be in to win!

You’ll see we’re welcoming a new group of gunning writers to the fold this issue, the NZ Waterfowlers team headed up by Geoff Irvine and Hunter Morrow. Hunter cleaned up first place at the NZ Hunter Live Duck and Goose Nationals, and Geoff came second, so these guys will nicely compliment the wonderful information Paul and at times Andrew have been sharing with us since Issue 1.

We kick off this edition with...

  • Andrew’s awesome story of 13, 14 and 15 pointers in the roar from the Southern Alps
  • Jesse’s 11 inch chamois
  • How to hunt summer Sika
  • King Country roars – a 12 pointer for Jonathan at last!
  • The BRB finds the last of the Mohicans – a Red deer in the Kawekas
  • How to use trail cameras to help your hunting
  • Why not the 270 part two – Johnnie’s favourite loads
  • A massive Colorado Elk by bow
  • Gun cleaning – an update
  • The tip of the iceberg – let your subconscious shoot your bow
  • Matt begins his advanced photography series - night scenes
  • Questing – enjoy the journey!
  • Periodisation – the final in Matt’s fitness series
  • Advanced handloading – Annealing
  • Geoff’s “What Off Season??!!” – summer goosin’
  • Getting on – Paul tells you how to get access to the hot spots
  • The Sika Show Report
  • Major Articles Index

We Evaluate:

  • Lowa Z-8S Stalking boots

Spot the Logo Competition Winners

The winners for “Spot the Logo” competition in Issue 43 are Brian Clements and George Spence. The logos were on page 61 in the Henry Rifle advert and on page 82 in the Helisika advert.

Well that’s all we’ve got room for this issue, so make the most of your Christmas break, and we’ll see you all in the New Year!
