Issue 43 - Oct / Nov 2014

Spring is just round the corner now, although it won’t hit the high country until well into November.

The stags have pretty much dropped their antlers but it’s still a great time to try for a trophy bull tahr or fill the freezer. It has been an easy winter by and large, and the deer will be getting fatter a little earlier than normal, especially at lower altitudes. This sets us up for a great antler growing season and next year we should see some ripper trophies being taken from our various game herds around the country.

While we welcome the new season’s growth and increased deer movement it brings with it, we are sad to see the end of an era with the death of Dinny Collings. Dinny was probably the most well-known gunsmith in New Zealand for many years, with his business Collings and Bradey in Karori servicing not only target shooters but hunters and shooters from all over the country. He has left a firearms legacy behind him with his children, Steve from Steve’s Wholesale in Wellington, Ross from Outdoor Supplies in Carterton, and NZ representative shooters Mike and Janet Collings. Dinny built a few rifles for us in our early years, before getting properly set up to build them ourselves. His many years of great service to the shooters of this country will not be forgotten.

We kick off this issue with...

NZ Hunter Adventures TV Show

And finally some exciting news is the NZ Hunter Adventures TV show will be going to air on Free to View CHOICE TV on Wednesday’s Great Outdoors night in January next year. This will be the first time a truly New Zealand hunting show of this quality featuring our most remote and rugged wilderness areas and the game animals that inhabit them has hit the screens in this country - and it won’t be on a weekend afternoon when we’re all out hunting, nor will you have to have Sky to watch it!

Watch the trailer here: http://adventuretvtrailer.nzhunter.co.nz

Or search ‘NZ Hunter Adventures’ on YouTube.

The spring winds are here now, but there’ll still be the odd cracker day in amongst the windy days, so get out there and make the most of it!
